Located on a lush riverfront site, the Brandywine River Museum merges art and nature, emphasizing the Brandywine Conservancy’s commitment to the preservation of the natural, cultural, and scenic resources of the region. GWWO has worked with the institution in support of this mission for more than 30 years, initially completing the adaptive reuse of the historic grist mill that became the museum, as well as the subsequent expansion that doubled the museum's size.

Most recently a significant master planning effort was undertaken that resulted in multiple projects: a major addition to the museum, new administrative building, new maintenance building, and renovations to several other structures on the Conservancy campus.

The new museum addition keeps the focus on the site and the museum’s original converted mill building. Sited at the east end of the existing entry courtyard, the addition disappears into the landscape, preserving views from the site’s entry gate and respecting the sensitive setting. A screen of mirrored surfaces that reflect the sky and surrounding trees masks the new construction, while the shape of the structure curves away from view, fading the addition into its surroundings with no discernible edge. The new support buildings similarly respect the site and context, drawing on the regional farm vernacular in their design.
