The Brafferton holds the honor of being the second oldest American collegiate building still active and in continuous use. Built in 1723, it had last been renovated in the 1930s during the restoration of Williamsburg. Despite serving as offices for campus leadership, and hosting dignitaries almost daily, the building’s materials and systems were failing.

As a result of this preservation and rehabilitation effort, the Brafferton stands ready to serve the college and community well into the future. The original fabric which remained was conserved and stabilized, and the renovation work of the 1930s, with its own level of historic significance, was respected.
