Towson University in Northeastern Maryland is a classroom facility that integrates alternative learning and social environments within the formal classroom program spaces of the building.

The site is a sloping meadow ringed by mature stands of trees and oriented westward to vast open views. Inspired by this powerful rural landscape, the building is designed as a “learning garden.”

Lodged into the slope as rock formations, two masonry wings create a central commons between them. An extension of the meadow, the multi-tiered learning commons is visually and physically connected to the surrounding landscape, and brings together spaces for collaborative and social learning beneath a green roof garden.
