Originally built to accommodate the northward expansion of Baltimore, the Mount Royal Station became a nationally-recognized example of historic adaptive reuse when it was purchased by MICA and converted to academic use in 1966. While respecting the 1966 efforts, this project restored the National Register-listed building to its original 1896 appearance and renovated spaces to accommodate MICA’s undergraduate fiber and general sculptural studies programs.

The building was brought into compliance with current codes and interior finishes were restored and preserved. Outside, a new pedestrian entrance and plaza provide a more convenient link to the rest of the MICA campus and faÇade improvements allow the building—with its clock tower now illuminated at night—to stand as a beacon and gateway to campus.

“Please know how grateful we are for your wonderful work ... This elegant landmark may never have looked as great as it does right now.”

—Fred Lazarus IV, retired President, Maryland Institute College of Art
